Pregnancy Milestones: Key Moments Week by Week
The Journey of a Lifetime
Pregnancy is filled with amazing moments. Here is a timeline of the major milestones you can look forward to.
Weeks 4-6: The Spark of Life
- Week 4: The positive test! Your body is producing enough hCG to be detected.
- Week 6: The heart begins to beat. It's tiny, but it's pumping blood. This is often when it can first be seen on an early ultrasound.
Weeks 8-12: Taking Shape
- Week 8: Fingers and toes are forming, though they might still be webbed.
- Week 10: The "embryonic" period ends. Your baby is now officially a fetus.
- Week 12: The risk of miscarriage drops significantly. Many parents choose to share their news around this time.
Weeks 16-20: Discovery
- Week 16: Gender might be visible! If the baby cooperates, an ultrasound tech might be able to tell if it's a boy or girl.
- Week 18-22: Quickening. You feel those first flutters of movement. It feels like butterflies or gas bubbles.
- Week 20: The Anatomy Scan. This is a detailed check-up to measure the baby and check all organs.
Weeks 24-28: Viability
- Week 24: Viability. This is a huge medical milestone. Babies born at 24 weeks have a chance of survival in a NICU.
- Week 28: Welcome to the third trimester. The baby can open and close their eyes.
Weeks 32-37: Getting Ready
- Week 32: Practice breathing. The baby is practicing the movements of breathing to strengthen their diaphragm.
- Week 36: The baby usually turns head-down (vertex) to prepare for birth.
- Week 37: Early Term. The baby is considered fully developed, though staying in longer is better for lung maturity.
Week 40: The Due Date
The finish line! But remember, it's just an estimate. Your baby will arrive when they are ready.
